California Man Sentenced to 87 Months for Opioid Conspiracy
A California man was sentenced to 87 months in prison for conspiring to distribute opioid pills across the country. Charles Rainer Sinek, 53, of Oakland, California, was found guilty in September 2016 after a three-day trial.
According to court records, Sinek used his father-in-law’s prescription pad to write prescriptions for Schedule II controlled substances, including oxycodone, oxymorphone, and hydromorphone, from 2011 to September 2012. He filled these prescriptions at different pharmacies using variations of his own name and at least one other pseudonym, before shipping the drugs to his co-conspirator in Saranac, New York, where they were sold.
U.S. Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Special Agent in Charge James J. Hunt, New York Division, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), announced the sentence.
Sinek’s scheme was uncovered by the DEA and the Plattsburgh Police Department, and was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Elizabeth R. Rabe. Senior United States District Judge Gary L. Sharpe also ordered Sinek to forfeit $164,025 as proceeds of the crime.
The case highlights the dangers of opioid trafficking and the importance of law enforcement’s efforts to combat this issue. Sinek’s sentence serves as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in such illegal activities.
