Jameel Byng, Heroin and Cocaine Distribution Conspiracy, New Jersey 2018

Camden, N.J. – Jameel Byng, 28, a local drug kingpin, was today sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for his involvement in a heroin and cocaine distribution conspiracy on the streets of Camden.

Byng pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute at least 100 grams of heroin, with an estimated amount jointly attributable to him ranging from 400-700 grams. He also admitted his role in the distribution of cocaine.

The investigation into Byng and his associates began in late 2018 when federal agents uncovered a drug-trafficking organization operating openly on the 400-500 block of Pine Street. The operation, which lasted several months, was brought to an end through video surveillance, confidential informants, controlled purchases, and wiretaps.

Overall, 19 defendants were arrested, with 17 entering guilty pleas for drug conspiracy charges. Two others await trial on related charges.

Judge Renée Marie Bumb also sentenced Byng to five years of supervised release following his prison term. Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig credited a host of law enforcement agencies for their roles in the investigation and prosecution, including the FBI, Camden County Police, Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Department, Cherry Hill Police Department, and New Jersey State Police.

The case is part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which targets high-level criminal organizations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara Aliabadi and Patrick C. Askin are handling the government’s case.
