Jameel Byng, Heroin Distribution Conspiracy, New Jersey 2018

Jameel Byng, 28, of Camden, is headed to federal prison for 63 months after admitting his role in a violent, open-air heroin and cocaine operation that terrorized the 400-500 block of Pine Street in 2018. Byng pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin, with prosecutors proving he was tied to the distribution of 400 to 700 grams of the deadly opioid — much of it laced with fentanyl. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Renée Marie Bumb, includes five years of supervised release following his prison term.

Byng was one of 19 defendants swept up in a sweeping FBI-led takedown targeting a highly organized drug ring that turned a residential block into a narcotics marketplace. The investigation — part of a federal Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation — relied on wiretaps, video surveillance, confidential informants, and controlled buys to map out the hierarchy of the operation. Street-level sellers like Byng worked rotating shifts, pushing poison around the clock while higher-ups managed supply, distribution, and security from the shadows.

Law enforcement recovered multiple firearms during the 2018 arrests, underscoring the violent undercurrent of the drug set. The organization dealt in pre-packaged heroin, crack cocaine, and powder cocaine — product sourced and distributed through a structured chain of command. Supervisors oversaw operations, ensuring constant flow of drugs mixed with fentanyl, a blend responsible for countless overdoses across South Jersey.

So far, 17 of the 19 defendants have entered guilty pleas on drug conspiracy charges in U.S. District Court. Their admissions confirm the scale of the operation: a relentless flood of narcotics into one of Camden’s most vulnerable neighborhoods. Two defendants remain defiant, set to face trial on May 9, 2022, before Judge Bumb. They are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Acting U.S. Attorney Rachael A. Honig credited the FBI’s South Jersey Violent Offender and Gang Task Force, the Camden County Police Department, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, the Sheriff’s Department, the Cherry Hill Police, and the N.J. State Police for dismantling the network. The DEA, U.S. Marshals, and Department of Homeland Security also provided critical support. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sara Aliabadi and Patrick C. Askin.

This case is emblematic of the federal crackdown on entrenched drug organizations using intelligence-driven, multi-agency force. OCDETF operations like this one aim not just to arrest street dealers, but to dismantle entire networks from top to bottom. Byng’s prison term is a warning — but the war for Camden’s streets is far from over.
