A local man in Winner, South Dakota, has been accused of violating federal firearm laws, according to a recent indictment. Cameron Fanning, 23 years old, stands accused of being a Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm.
The federal charge carries significant penalties, with a maximum sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison and/or a $250,000 fine. In addition, Fanning may face three years of supervised release and a mandatory payment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. The court may also order restitution.
The allegations against Fanning stem from an incident that took place on August 6, 2021, in Mission, South Dakota. According to the indictment, Fanning knowingly possessed a firearm despite having been previously convicted of a crime punishable by imprisonment for a term exceeding one year.
Fanning entered a plea of not guilty to the indictment on December 21, 2021, before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno. He was subsequently remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not yet been set.
The investigation into Fanning’s activities was led by the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby Roesler is prosecuting the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime.
PSN focuses on identifying the most pressing violent crime problems in communities and developing comprehensive solutions to address them. The program works with a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including law enforcement, prevention programs, and reentry initiatives, to create lasting reductions in crime.
