Fentanyl Dealers Leave Deadly Trail of Destruction

Los Angeles, CA – A Hollywood Hills resident has been taken into custody on federal charges for allegedly peddling counterfeit pharmaceuticals containing the deadly synthetic opioid, fentanyl, to hip-hop artist Mac Miller two days before his overdose death.

Cameron James Pettit, 28, is set to appear in court today after being arrested by DEA special agents and the LAPD. Pettit is charged with one count of distribution of a controlled substance, punishable by up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted.

According to the affidavit, Pettit agreed to supply Mac Miller, 26, with 30 milligram oxycodone pills, as well as cocaine and Xanax, on the night of September 4, 2018. However, instead of genuine oxycodone, Pettit allegedly handed over counterfeit pills containing fentanyl, a substance 50 times more potent than heroin.

Two days after the alleged sale, Mac Miller died in his Studio City home from a mixed drug toxicity involving fentanyl, cocaine, and alcohol. Investigators believe that the counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl were the primary cause of his death.

As the nation grapples with the opioid epidemic, law enforcement officials are doubling down on efforts to take down fentanyl dealers like Pettit. "Fentanyl disguised as a genuine pharmaceutical is a killer," said US Attorney Nick Hanna. "We owe it to the victims and their families to aggressively target the drug dealers that cause these overdose deaths."

The HIDTA Fusion Task Force and the LAPD are being credited with the success in bringing Pettit to justice. "Let our message be clear," said DEA Los Angeles Deputy Special Agent in Charge Daniel C. Comeaux. "If you peddle illegal drugs and kill someone, the DEA will be the voice of the victim. We will not rest until you face the justice system."
