Amadou Diol, a 43-year-old New York man, was part of a scheme to steal and sell over 20 rental cars in the central and eastern United States. The thefts occurred from December 2020 to December 2021, with Diol and his co-conspirators using fake and genuine driver’s licenses to rent the vehicles. The cars were then transported across state lines and sold to buyers who exported them overseas.
The investigation, led by the FBI, revealed that Diol and his co-conspirators used various means to obtain the vehicles, including using genuine driver’s licenses belonging to unaware third parties and creating fake licenses. They received payment for the stolen vehicles in cash, electronic payments, and even luxury vehicles.
Diol pleaded guilty to conspiracy and two counts of transportation of stolen vehicles in March. He was sentenced to 60 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release, by United States District Judge Kelley Brisbon Hodge.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Meghan Claiborne Bisio and Kara Traster. The sentence marks a significant blow to the car theft ring, which had been operating in the Eastern PA area for over a year.
