Flint, MI – A carjacking con was caught red-handed trying to clear his name, literally, by bribing a witness to lie under oath. Omar Pouncy, 38, of Flint, pleaded guilty to suborning perjury in a Michigan federal court, just as his trial was heating up.
Pouncy was already serving time for multiple carjackings and armed robberies in Genesee County in 2005. But he wanted out, so he concocted a scheme to prove his innocence. He paid Jaakawa McGruder $10,000 to claim responsibility for the crimes instead.
It almost worked. The district judge released Pouncy on bond and even ruled in his favor after McGruder testified falsely at an evidentiary hearing in 2018. But prison employees found two cell phones Pouncy was using to orchestrate the scheme, and the jig was up.
Pouncy faces up to 5 years in federal prison and is set to be sentenced on July 14, 2026. He’s got some time to think about his next move.
