Delaware Man Admits to Distributing Heroin in New Jersey

In a shocking revelation, Carl L. Jones, a 49-year-old man from Newport, Delaware, has pleaded guilty to distributing and possessing heroin with the intent to distribute. This disturbing crime occurred on March 29, 2019, in a commercial parking lot in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey.

According to court documents, Jones distributed, and possessed with intent to distribute, at least 700 grams, but less than one kilogram, of a mixture and substance containing a detectable amount of heroin to a confidential source who was working with law enforcement. The source was acting with the guidance of law enforcement, further highlighting the scope of this operation.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced the guilty plea, emphasizing the severity of the crime. With a maximum potential penalty of 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of up to $1 million, Jones’s fate is now in the hands of the court. Sentencing has been scheduled for September 6, 2023.

The investigation that led to Jones’s guilty plea was a collaborative effort, with special agents from the Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Ricky J. Patel in Newark, playing a crucial role. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristen M. Harberg in Camden represented the government in this case.

The Camden federal court witnessed Jones’s guilty plea, with U.S. District Judge Christine P. O’Hearn presiding over the proceedings. This guilty plea serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in New Jersey and beyond.

As the investigation unfolds, it becomes increasingly clear that the distribution of heroin has severe consequences for individuals and communities alike. Jones’s guilty plea is a significant step towards holding those responsible accountable for their actions.
