Former LAPD Officer Pleads Guilty in Smuggling Attempt

A former Los Angeles police officer, Carlos Curiel Quezada Jr., has pleaded guilty to attempting to smuggle a Mexican citizen into the United States. The incident took place at the Otay Mesa border crossing in March 2015.

According to court documents, Quezada and his girlfriend, Angelica Godinez, were stopped by a Customs and Border Protection Officer for a more intensive inspection. During the inspection, officers detected something unusual in the rear cargo area of the vehicle and found Antanasio Perez Avalos, a 26-year-old Mexican national, in a compartment in the spare-tire area.

Quezada and Godinez were both charged with bringing in illegal aliens without presentation, a federal crime that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and a $250,000 fine.

Both defendants are scheduled to be sentenced on August 26, 2016, at 8:30 a.m. before U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael Lasater and Benjamin Katz are handling the prosecution.

The guilty plea is a significant blow to the integrity of law enforcement and highlights the need for accountability within the ranks.

As a former police officer, Quezada’s actions are especially egregious and demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and the public trust.
