A Carrollton woman has been convicted of a brazen $185,000 bank fraud scheme that targeted Central Trust Bank in Jefferson City, Missouri.
According to the evidence presented in court, Carol Joyce Noble, 65, defrauded the bank in September 2011 to obtain a fraudulent $185,000 loan to purchase a convenience store in Stover, Missouri.
The scheme involved a fake appraisal of her Gravois Mills, Missouri, residential property to secure the loan.
Noble allegedly changed the physical address of her residence to an adjacent property by altering the last digit of the house number. She then met the appraiser at the neighbor’s home and misrepresented that it was her own property.
The appraiser, unaware of the ruse, appraised the wrong home at a value of $100,000 higher than the true value of Noble’s property.
A jury in the U.S. District Court in Jefferson City, Missouri, deliberated for about two hours before returning the guilty verdicts to U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough.
Noble was found guilty of two counts of bank fraud related to the fraudulent appraisal. She now faces a maximum sentence of up to 40 years in federal prison without parole.
