GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: A Carroll County registered nurse has been handed a seven-month federal prison term and ordered to pay a $20,000 fine for stealing pain medication from patients and burglarizing several homes.
Cassandra Lynne Vonnahme, 32, from Arcadia, Iowa, pled guilty on November 30, 2023, to one count of acquiring a controlled substance by means of misrepresentation and one count of false statements relating to health care matters. The offenses occurred between November 2020 and December 2020 at the life care center where she was employed.
Investigators revealed that Vonnahme not only stole controlled substances from actual patients but also burglarized 5-6 homes following her termination as a nurse for the thefts. She was convicted of impersonating a public official in Carroll County in 2021, gaining entry to a stranger’s home under false pretenses and stealing more controlled substances.
Sentencing took place in Sioux City before United States District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand, who imposed the prison term and fine. Vonnahme will also serve a two-year term of supervised release following her prison sentence. There is no parole available in the federal system, and she has been released on bond pending surrender to the Bureau of Prisons at an undetermined date.
