A brazen display of gun violence sent shockwaves through the quiet city of Ham Lake, Minnesota, leaving residents shaken and authorities scrambling to make an arrest. That suspect, 21-year-old Carson Thomas McCoy, was taken into custody on August 10, 2022, after a high-speed chase that ended with a collision involving an Anoka County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle.
According to court documents and a law enforcement affidavit, the incident began when deputies responded to a residential burglary at 1:26 p.m. The homeowner’s video surveillance system captured McCoy prying open the front door and making off with a stolen black BMW sedan, a Springfield Armory .45 caliber handgun, two loaded ammunition magazines, and $1,500 in cash.
Less than 30 minutes later, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office received reports of shots fired near Lexington Avenue NE and 155th Avenue NE in Ham Lake. Witnesses described a black BMW sedan nearly colliding with three people riding motorcycles before the occupants fired multiple shots at the motorcyclists. The BMW was eventually located and the driver, McCoy, was taken into custody along with a female passenger.
A search of the BMW yielded the Springfield Armory handgun, a Bersa .380 caliber handgun, narcotics, and $851 in cash. Further investigation revealed that McCoy had used a false identification card to arrange a test drive of the stolen black BMW sedan at a car dealership in Eden Prairie on July 19, 2022.
Mccoy is charged with one count of possession of a firearm as a felon. He appeared in U.S. District Court before Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Cowan Wright and was ordered to remain in detention pending further proceedings.
This case is the result of an investigation conducted by the FBI, the Minneapolis Police Department, the Blaine Police Department, and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan L. Sing is prosecuting the case.
