Casey James Godfrey, Internet Sexual Contact With A Minor, South Dakota 2014

Rapid City, South Dakota – A local man has been arrested and charged with attempting to entice a minor and transfer obscene material via the internet.

According to authorities, Casey James Godfrey, 27, used the internet to lure a girl under the age of 18 into engaging in sexual activity. He also allegedly sent obscene matter to the girl.

The charges against Godfrey are Attempted Enticement of a Minor Using the Internet and Attempted Transfer of Obscene Material to a Minor. If convicted, Godfrey faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison up to life imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine.

Godfrey was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service after he appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on January 24, 2014, and pled not guilty to the Indictment. A trial date has not been set.

The investigation was conducted by the Nebraska State Patrol and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins is prosecuting the case.

Godfrey’s case serves as a reminder of the importance of online safety and the consequences of exploiting minors. The Federal Crime Victims Fund will also be impacted, with Godfrey potentially facing a $100 assessment.

In a statement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office stressed that the charges against Godfrey are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
