John M. Casper, Embezzlement, North Carolina 2023

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a brazen scheme that would make even the most seasoned con artist blush, former Chief Financial Officer John M. Casper, 60, of Charlotte, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison followed by one year of supervised release for embezzling over $694,000 from his employer.

According to court documents, between 2018 and 2020, Casper used his position to embezzle thousands of dollars from his company through 112 unauthorized financial transactions. The cunning CFO transferred funds from the company’s accounts to bank accounts under his control, disguising the fraud by creating fake or incorrect financial entries in the company’s books and records.

Casper’s scheme was uncovered after a thorough investigation by the FBI in Charlotte, which was announced by U.S. Attorney Dena J. King. ‘We commend the FBI for their tireless efforts in bringing this perpetrator to justice,’ King said.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Graham Billings of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Charlotte prosecuted the case, which resulted in Casper’s guilty plea to wire fraud on September 19, 2023. As part of his sentence, Casper will be ordered to report to a designated United States Bureau of Prisons facility to begin serving his 24-month sentence.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of corporate greed and the importance of holding those in positions of power accountable for their actions. As the FBI’s Special Agent in Charge, Robert M. DeWitt, noted, ‘This sentence sends a clear message that embezzlement will not be tolerated and those who engage in such behavior will face the full weight of the law.’

As Casper begins his prison sentence, his victims can finally find some measure of closure and justice. The case is a testament to the tireless work of law enforcement and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in bringing corrupt individuals to justice and protecting the public from financial harm.
