Sacramento Trafficker Sentenced to 11+ Years for Smuggling 22 Kilos of Cocaine
A 37-year-old Sacramento resident has been handed a lengthy prison sentence for his role in a massive cocaine smuggling operation that brought 22 kilos of the deadly drug into the Rio Grande Valley.
Shaun Michael Simmons pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import narcotics on October 11, 2023, and on March 22, 2024, U.S. District Judge Randy Crane sentenced him to 135 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release. The harsh sentence came after the court heard evidence that Simmons held a leadership role in the organization and had a history of criminal activity.
The investigation, led by Homeland Security Investigations, revealed that Simmons had recruited Ericka Iesha Thomas to find a co-conspirator to transport narcotics from Mexico into the United States. Thomas, 30, of California, had previously recruited Dustin Oliver, 35, of Indiana, to make the trip. Oliver was stopped at the Anzalduas Port of Entry on June 14, 2022, and a physical search of his vehicle revealed 20 packages of cocaine weighing approximately 22 kilograms.
Thomas and Oliver were both previously sentenced to 24 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for their roles in the conspiracy. Simmons will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility. Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexa D. Parcell prosecuted the case.
The Rio Grande Valley has become a hotbed for cocaine smuggling, with numerous cases in recent years highlighting the dangers of the region’s porous border. The sentencing of Simmons serves as a reminder of the severe consequences faced by those involved in these operations.
As the investigation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Simmons will face further charges or penalties. One thing is certain: the Rio Grande Valley will continue to be a focal point for law enforcement efforts to combat the flow of narcotics into the United States.
