CBP Officer Arrested for Sexual Assaults at Miami Airport

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual assault at Miami International Airport.

According to the indictment, Paulo Morales, 47, allegedly committed civil rights offenses and abusive sexual contact against three separate women in January 2011. The non-consensual groping of the women’s breasts is said to have occurred while they were in the custody of Customs and Border Protection.

Morales was arrested on Monday after a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Florida indicted him on six counts, including three felony counts of abusive sexual contact and three misdemeanor counts of deprivation of civil rights.

The maximum sentence for each count of abusive sexual contact is two years in prison, while the maximum sentence for each count of deprivation of civil rights is one year in prison.

The investigation into Morales’ actions is ongoing and is being led by the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida is prosecuting the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney William White and Trial Attorney Henry Leventis handling the prosecution.

An indictment is merely an accusation, and Morales is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
