Alan Ault, Federal Prison Escape, Iowa 2018

Alan Ault, a 45-year-old resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has been sentenced to serve 22 months in federal prison for his daring escape from the Gerald R. Hinzman Center, where he was serving out the final stretch of a twenty-year sentence for drug offenses.

Ault’s escapade began on March 27, 2018, when he vanished from the center, which is under Federal Bureau of Prisons custody in Cedar Rapids. He pleaded guilty to escaping federal custody on January 29, 2019, and later admitted to violating his supervised release terms by committing further violations after his initial escape.

His original sentence was handed down on January 13, 2005, for a federal drug and firearm conviction. Ault’s criminal spree didn’t end there; he was recaptured by the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force in Cedar Rapids on August 27, 2018.

The U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade imposed a sentence of 14 months for the supervised release violation and an additional 8 months for the new escape charge. Ault is also subject to a mandatory 3-year term of supervised release following his prison term, with no parole available in the federal system.

Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert handled the prosecution, while the United States Marshal’s Service and the Northern Iowa Fugitive Task Force conducted the investigation.
