Clayton Don Gregory, a 36-year-old resident of Cedar Rapids, has been sentenced to more than 24 years in federal prison for distributing methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The sentence, handed down by United States District Court Judge Linda R. Reade on April 11, 2017, includes 293 months’ imprisonment on the drug count and an additional 120 months’ concurrent sentence on the gun charge.
Gregory’s criminal activities began in July 2016 when he sold methamphetamine to a confidential informant on multiple occasions. His illegal activities came to light during a search of his residence in August 2016, where officers found meth, marijuana, ammunition, and a partially dismantled revolver.
Following the search, Gregory took part in a high-speed chase with police, reaching speeds of up to 85 miles per hour in a 30-mile-per-hour zone. He attempted to dispose of a firearm in a cornfield but was eventually apprehended by a K-9 unit. A 9 mm Ruger pistol and ammunition were recovered from the cornfield.
In addition to his lengthy prison term, Gregory must serve a five-year term of supervised release following his prison sentence. There is no possibility of parole under federal law.
The case against Gregory was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham.
