Facing a decade behind bars, Ivan Avila, 21, of Sioux City, Iowa, was sentenced on April 13, 2017, to over ten years in federal prison for his involvement in a methamphetamine distribution conspiracy.
Avila pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and two counts of distributing the drug. His sentence includes 121 months’ imprisonment, a $300 special assessment, and a four-year term of supervised release following his release from prison. There is no parole in the federal system.
The plea hearing revealed Avila’s admission of conspiring with others to distribute methamphetamine in Sioux City between 2015 and January 2016. In early 2016, law enforcement conducted two controlled buys of meth from Avila through a confidential source.
Judge Leonard T. Strand of the United States District Court sentenced Avila at the federal courthouse in Sioux City. Avila is currently in custody with the U.S. Marshals Service until he can be transported to a federal prison facility.
The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Ajay Alexander and investigated by the Tri-State Drug Task Force, which includes personnel from various law enforcement agencies such as the DEA, Sioux City Police Department, Homeland Security Investigations, and Iowa National Guard, among others.
