Cedar Rapids, Iowa – A harrowing incident in which a local man opened fire during a drive-by shooting has culminated in a 24-month prison sentence for the shooter. Treysean Adair Burnside, aged 23, was handed the stiff penalty after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a drug user on January 14, 2019.
The saga began on July 22 of last year when an argument over a counterfeit $100 bill escalated into a violent confrontation. Following the dispute at a local bar, Burnside retreated home and armed himself with a loaded 9mm pistol. From his front porch, he waited for his attacker. When a vehicle drove by and fired shots toward his residence, Burnside unleashed six or seven rounds in retaliation.
Thankfully, no one was injured in the shooting. However, a neighboring house bore the brunt of the violence, suffering damage to its interior. At the time of the incident, Burnside was high on cocaine, and he confessed to using marijuana daily.
Burnside faced sentencing in Cedar Rapids by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams, who imposed the 24-month imprisonment without parole. He was directed to surrender himself to United States Marshal’s custody on June 14, 2019, to commence his prison term.
This case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative aimed at reducing violent crime through evidence-based programs and comprehensive community solutions. The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Corkery, with the investigation conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Cedar Rapids Police Department.
