A 29-year-old Tijuana man has pleaded guilty to laundering $13 million in narcotics proceeds for the notorious Sinaloa Cartel.
Cesar Hernandez-Martinez, 29, of Tijuana, pleaded guilty in federal court yesterday to managing and supervising an extensive international money laundering organization.
According to prosecutors, Hernandez-Martinez owned and operated currency exchange houses in Tijuana that received smuggled drug proceeds from the United States.
Between April 2013 and November 2015, Hernandez-Martinez coordinated couriers who smuggled money from Southern California to Mexico, ensuring that they picked up the currency from the correct sources.
Hernandez-Martinez admitted that he knew the money received was from narcotics trafficking activity in the United States and that he worked with the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most powerful and notorious drug cartels in Mexico.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is working this case together with the Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section of the Criminal Division in Washington, D.C.
Hernandez-Martinez will be sentenced on July 8, 2019, and faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum fine of $26 million.
