Cesar Rafael Leon, Human Smuggling Attempt, Texas 2024

McALLEN, Texas – A dramatic showdown in the Rio Grande Valley ended with 34-year-old Cesar Rafael Leon, a suspected human smuggler, behind bars. During an alleged smuggling attempt, Leon’s vehicle collided with a law enforcement vehicle and subsequently crashed, leading to his capture.

The incident began when Leon picked up five illegal aliens who had just crossed the Rio Grande River by raft in Mercedes. He failed to yield to police, triggering a high-speed chase that lasted approximately 15 minutes. The chase ended in Weslaco, with law enforcement apprehending Leon and the alleged victims after a brief foot pursuit.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas J. Ganjei called human smugglers predators who put lives at risk. “The Southern District of Texas urges all those who would consider placing themselves or their loved ones into the hands of these criminals to think twice,” Ganjei warned.

Leon, who was previously in custody on related charges, faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted. Assistant U.S. Attorney Devin V. Walker is handling the prosecution.

The investigation was carried out by Border Patrol with assistance from Texas DPS, Hidalgo County Constables Office, and Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office. This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at repelling illegal immigration and protecting communities.
