A Peru citizen has been charged with a serious crime in Connecticut.
Cesar Ruben Yllescas, 45, was arrested yesterday in Hartford and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna F. Martinez, pleading not guilty to the charge. He is currently being detained.
According to court documents, Yllescas was removed to Peru on June 2016 after being arrested for possession of narcotics in 2014. On August 1, 2014, he was arrested by Hartford Police for the offense, and on December 21, 2015, he pleaded guilty in state court to both the drug offense and a charge of failing to appear for a related court appearance.
Yllescas is facing a maximum term of imprisonment of 20 years if convicted of the charge of illegal reentry.
The investigation is being led by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Margaret E. Maigret handling the case.
This is a serious offense that carries significant penalties. The government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt if Yllescas is to be convicted.
