Chain Gang Defendant Sentenced to 30 Years in Prison

Rochester, NY – In a stunning blow to the city’s notorious Chain Gang, 23-year-old Russell ‘TJ’ Hampton has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in a violent string of crimes.

A federal jury convicted Hampton in July 2011, along with co-defendants Dearick Smith and Michael Jackson, of conspiracy to engage in racketeering activity, including narcotics trafficking, murder, attempted murder and weapons possession.

The ‘Chain Gang,’ also known as the ‘Wolfpack,’ controlled the streets in the area of Chamberlain and Garson Avenues in Rochester, with a reign of terror that included multiple acts of drug trafficking and the 2007 murder of Carmella Rogers.

‘Today’s sentencing is an example of the severe punishment that awaits all gang members who engage in violence and drug trafficking,’ said U.S. Attorney William J. Hochul, Jr.

The investigation, led by Special Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and officers and investigators with the Rochester Police Department, resulted in the conviction of all 19 gang members charged in the case.

Hampton’s sentence includes 30 years in prison, followed by 10 years supervised release. His co-defendant Dearick Smith was sentenced to 50 years in prison in July 2013.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office will continue to prosecute any individual or group of individuals who engage in such illicit behavior, said Hochul.

The sentencing marks a major victory for the city, which has struggled with gang violence for years.
