Kansas City Man Pleads Guilty to Felon in Possession of Firearm

Kansas City, MO – In a shocking turn of events, Chance Ayers, 25, pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition in federal court.

Ayers led police officers on a high-speed chase in a stolen vehicle, a maroon 2002 Mercury Sable, which had been reported stolen after a burglary earlier that day. The vehicle was spotted by a Kansas City police detective, who followed Ayers to a gas station, where he pulled up next to the front of the building.

Ayers was arrested after a brief car chase and found to be in possession of a loaded New England 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun on the driver’s side floorboard. Two more shotgun shells were found on the floor next to the shotgun.

Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who has been convicted of a felony to be in possession of any firearm or ammunition. Ayers has prior felony convictions for burglary, theft, and criminal damage, and was on state parole at the time of the alleged offense.

Ayers faces a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison without parole, as prescribed by Congress. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled after the completion of a presentence investigation by the United States Probation Office.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine A. Connelly, and was investigated by the Kansas City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is partnering with federal, state, and local law enforcement to specifically identify criminals responsible for significant violent crime in the Western District of Missouri through Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement to reduce violent crime and make neighborhoods safer for everyone.
