RAPID CITY – In a shocking case of child abuse, Chandler New Holy, a 28-year-old resident of Porcupine, South Dakota, has been sentenced to two years in federal prison for having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

According to the indictment, New Holy corresponded with the minor over a social media platform, where she initially represented herself as 16 years old. New Holy, who claimed to be 17 at the time, later discovered that the girl was actually 14 years old. Despite this knowledge, he continued the relationship, keeping it a secret from authorities.

The investigation began when the girl’s family reported her missing. Law enforcement later found her with New Holy, leading to his arrest and prosecution. The FBI investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Poppen handled the prosecution.

New Holy was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2024 and pleaded guilty to the charges in January 2025. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier on May 30, 2025, and ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Under the terms of his sentence, New Holy will spend two years in federal prison followed by five years of supervised release. He was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

This case was brought under the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that requires certain violent crimes to be prosecuted in federal court rather than state court. It was also part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The investigation and prosecution of New Holy’s case demonstrate the determination of law enforcement agencies to protect children from predators and ensure that those who commit such heinous crimes are held accountable.
