Fort Thompson Man Sentenced for Failure to Register as a Sex Offender
Stuart Dion, 41, was sentenced to time served and five years of supervised release for failing to register as a sex offender.
Pierre, SD – A man from Fort Thompson, South Dakota, was sentenced for failure to register as a sex offender. On July 29, 2025, U.S. District Judge Eric C. Shulte sentenced Stuart Dion, 41, to time served through August 4, 2025, equal to 11.5 months in custody, followed by five years of supervised release and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Dion was indicted by a federal grand jury in January 2025 and pleaded guilty on July 14, 2025. He is required to register as a sex offender under federal law due to a prior federal conviction for Sexual Abuse of a Minor. Dion has been convicted of Failure to Register in the past.
According to court documents, Dion registered an address in Ft. Thompson, SD, on the Crow Creek Sioux Indian Reservation in March 2024. However, he moved from his registered address on April 11, 2024, and knowingly failed to update his registration with authorities as required by law.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshal’s Service, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan Dilges prosecuted the case.
Project Safe Childhood is a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse.
