Defendant Sentenced to 12.5 Years for Transporting Child Pornography
A 42-year-old man from Charlotte, North Carolina, has been sentenced to 151 months in prison for transporting child pornography. Charles Gary Humphrey was found to have shared 55 files containing a mix of child pornography and child erotica online.
According to court documents, on October 9, 2015, law enforcement became aware of Humphrey’s online activities. He was using a peer-to-peer network to view and trade child pornography. On January 25, 2016, Humphrey transported 55 files containing child pornography to an undercover FBI agent.
Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Humphrey’s residence, seizing his computer. A forensic examination revealed that it contained over 5,000 images and videos of children engaging in sexually explicit conduct. Some of the images and videos contained identified victims of 25 different series of child pornography.
The FBI’s Crimes Against Children Squad investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Cortney Randall prosecuted the case. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
U.S. Attorney R. Andrew Murray announced the sentencing, stating that Humphrey’s actions were a serious threat to the community. Chief U.S. District Judge Frank D. Whitney also ordered Humphrey to serve a lifetime of supervised release and to register as a sex offender after he is released from prison.
The FBI’s Special Agent in Charge, John A. Strong, joined U.S. Attorney Murray in making the announcement. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting children from exploitation and abuse online.
Project Safe Childhood is a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. For more information about Project Safe Childhood, please visit www.projectsafechildhood.gov.
