CHARLES JERNIGAN, Crack Cocaine Trafficking, Connecticut 2015

A 23-year-old Hartford man has been sentenced to 6 years in prison for his role in a crack cocaine trafficking ring in the city’s North End.

CHARLES JERNIGAN, also known as "CJ" and "Snooze," was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin W. Thompson in Hartford to 78 months of imprisonment, followed by five years of supervised release, for distributing crack cocaine.

Jernigan’s sentence also includes 50 hours of community service, which is a requirement set by Judge Thompson.

The investigation into Jernigan’s activities was a joint effort between the FBI’s Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force and the Hartford Police Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit.

Between June and August 2015, law enforcement officials made controlled purchases of crack cocaine from Jernigan and his associates in the area of Edgewood Street and Albany Avenue.

Jernigan has been in custody since his arrest on September 17, 2015, and pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and distribution of, 28 grams or more of cocaine base "crack cocaine" on November 22, 2016.

Jernigan’s criminal history includes multiple drug-related convictions, as well as being a victim of two gang-related shootings.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian P. Leaming is prosecuting the case, which involved the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Hartford Police Department, East Hartford Police Department, Connecticut State Police, and the Connecticut Department of Correction.
