A 52-year-old Elkhart man has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for his role in a wire fraud scheme that left multiple victims financially devastated. Charles Ray Smith, 52, pleaded guilty to the charges and was met with a harsh sentence.

According to documents in the case, from November 2016 to October 2021, Smith falsely represented to several individuals that they would receive large returns on their investments if they gave him their money. Unfortunately, Smith did not invest the money as promised but instead used it for his personal gain.

One of the most egregious examples of Smith’s misuse of funds was the purchase of a 3,500-square-foot residence. This lavish purchase was made possible by the money that was meant to be invested for the victims’ benefit.

The scheme, which was uncovered by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, resulted in Smith fraudulently obtaining over $300,000. He was also ordered to pay $315,020 in restitution to the victims of the offense.

The sentencing took place in the United States District Court in South Bend, Indiana, with Judge Damon R. Leichty presiding. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Luke N. Reilander.

Smith’s 24-month prison sentence will be followed by 3 years of supervised release. He will also be required to pay the restitution to the victims of the offense.
