Xavier Zebulon Marzette, a 39-year-old South Bend resident, has been dealt a stiff sentence for his involvement in a violent crime. In a shocking turn of events, Marzette was found guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm after a 2-day jury trial.
According to court documents, on September 2019, South Bend Police responded to a disturbance at an apartment complex. During their investigation, officers discovered a loaded 9mm handgun inside a car leaving the scene. Further investigation revealed that the DNA on the trigger belonged to Marzette.
Marzette’s conviction comes as a result of a joint effort between the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the South Bend Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Joel Gabrielse and Katelan Doyle led the prosecution.
This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in communities nationwide. The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy, supporting community-based organizations, and setting strategic enforcement priorities.
On May 26, 2021, the government launched a violent crime reduction strategy, strengthening PSN with core principles that prioritize community engagement and targeted enforcement.
As a result of his conviction, Marzette has been sentenced to 36 months in prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. His sentence serves as a reminder that violent crime will not be tolerated in our communities.
