Huntington, W.Va. – A six-month prison sentence awaits 39-year-old Jaron Andrew O’Neal of Charleston after he was caught with nearly a kilogram of deadly fentanyl in what law enforcement called an Operation Synthetic Opioid Surge (SOS) success.
According to court documents, O’Neal’s downfall began when a K9 unit alerted to a package at a Barboursville address. Inside, investigators found the substance they were seeking. With a clever sting operation, they swapped out the real fentanyl for a sham and delivered it to O’Neal’s doorstep.
O’Neal, thinking he had retrieved a batch of controlled substances, drove off with the package. But his joy was short-lived when federal agents pulled him over during a traffic stop and discovered the stash.
United States Attorney Lisa G. Johnston announced the sentence, commending the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for their relentless pursuit of drug traffickers like O’Neal.
Judge Robert C. Chambers imposed the sentence, while Assistant United States Attorney Courtney L. Finney led the prosecution.
This case is part of Operation SOS, a high-impact initiative targeting synthetic opioids. More information can be found on the U.S. Attorney’s Office website and PACER by searching for Case No. 3:24-cr-85.
