Charleston Shooter’s Associate Pleads Guilty
A disturbing chapter in the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting case unfolded this week, as a South Carolina man admitted to lying and concealment related to the deadly attack. Joseph Carlton Meek, 21, of Lexington, South Carolina, pleaded guilty to misprision of a felony and making a false statement, both federal crimes.
Meek’s guilty plea stems from his actions following the June 17, 2015, attack on parishioners of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston. The brutal assault left nine people dead and a community shaken.
According to prosecutors, Meek’s crimes carry a maximum sentence of three years for misprision of a felony and five years for making a false statement. United States District Judge Richard Gergel presided over the hearing and will sentence Meek at a later date.
Meek’s guilty plea is the result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, City of Charleston Police Department, and South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. Assistant United States Attorneys Jay N. Richardson and Nathan Williams are prosecuting the case.
The investigation revealed that Meek’s actions were connected to the shooting, but the specifics of his involvement have not been disclosed. The guilty plea is a significant development in the ongoing case, which has captivated the nation with its shocking brutality.
As the community continues to heal from the wounds of the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting, Meek’s guilty plea serves as a reminder that justice will be pursued for those who seek to harm and deceive. The Grimy Times will continue to provide updates on this case as more information becomes available.
Meek’s sentencing is pending, but one thing is clear: his guilty plea marks a significant step towards closure for the victims and their families.
