CHARLESTON, W.VA. — The streets of Charleston’s West Side are one step safer today as Juanita Carrie Haynes, 54, was handed a nine-year sentence for her role in the distribution of methamphetamine.
Haynes was part of a drug-trafficking organization that has been under scrutiny since November 2018. United States Attorney Mike Stuart had a tough message: “9 years. Haynes will be serving 9 years in federal prison.”
The sentence comes after Haynes was found guilty by a federal jury for distributing 3.5 grams of meth to an informant and conspiring with her son, Edwin Shaffer, to distribute over 50 grams.
Shaffer’s sentencing is set for June 13th, 2019. The recovery of over 150 grams of meth from the trailer Haynes shared with Shaffer in July 2018 was key evidence against her.
The Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team conducted the investigation, and Assistant United States Attorney Monica D. Coleman led the prosecution. Senior United States District Judge John T. Copenhaver, Jr., imposed the harsh sentence.
