Jamaris Ladell Smith, 36, of Charlotte, N.C., was today sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for a brutal string of armed robberies that terrorized the city. The sentence, announced by U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson and echoed by FBI and CMPD officials, marks the culmination of a relentless investigation.
Smith, who pleaded guilty to six counts of Hobbs Act robberies and brandishing a firearm during the crime, faced Judge Max O. Cogburn Jr. for sentencing on February 16, 2024. The judge emphasized the severity of Smith’s actions and the need to promote respect for property and safety within the community.
According to court documents, Smith committed six armed robberies over two days in January 2023. His modus operandi was simple yet terrifying: he entered stores, pointed a gun at employees, and demanded cash. In one incident at Sam’s Mart on January 17, he threatened the clerk with lethal force if she did not comply with his demands.
The evidence against Smith was overwhelming. Surveillance videos captured him in distinctive clothing worn during each robbery, and law enforcement recovered the firearm used from his vehicle. His plea of guilty came after a thorough investigation that linked him to all six crimes.
Smith’s actions shocked Charlotte residents, who have been living under the shadow of fear for months. With today’s sentence, the judicial system has sent a clear message: violent crime will not be tolerated in North Carolina.
As Smith begins his sentence, justice has been served for the victims of these heinous crimes. The Charlotte community can now breathe easier, knowing that one of their most dangerous citizens is no longer on the streets.
