Bryan Chiropractor Convicted of Defrauding Auto Insurers
HOUSTON, TEXAS – A Bryan chiropractor has been convicted of defrauding automobile insurance companies out of $3 million. Chase Lindsey, 34, the co-owner of Lindsey Chiropractic Care, pleaded guilty to engaging in a conspiracy to defraud auto insurance companies.
Lindsey admitted to participating in a two-year conspiracy to defraud numerous auto insurance companies by allowing fraudulent chiropractic bills to be created under his name for treatments that were never performed. He used these fake bills to support settlement demand letters sent to auto insurance companies, causing them to issue settlement checks.
In exchange for $2,000 in cash per month, Lindsey agreed to provide medical evaluations and recommend treatment for patients in exchange for cash. He would recommend medically unnecessary treatments and even allowed unlicensed, untrained, and unqualified individuals to provide these treatments.
Lindsey and his co-conspirators used four chiropractic clinics in the scheme, including Lindsey Chiropractic Care, H & E Chiropractic, Private Chiropractic Care, and Texas Avenue Chiropractic Clinic. Despite changing the name and location of the clinic four times, the scheme remained the same.
The scheme resulted in the submission of more than $3 million in false billing claims, with insurance companies paying at least $1.2 million in false claims during 2007-2009. Lindsey faces up to 30 years in prison and a possible $1 million fine. He has agreed to pay restitution of $1.2 million to the insurance companies victimized by the scheme.
U.S. District Judge Kenneth Hoyt accepted Lindsey’s guilty plea and set sentencing for April 22, 2013. The remaining defendants charged in relation to the conspiracy are set for trial on April 2, 2013.
