A Cassville man has been slammed with a 16-year, eight-month federal prison sentence for exploiting a 12-year-old girl in a predatory online scheme that crossed state lines. Chase Trevor Norman, 26, pleaded guilty to child sexual exploitation and enticing a minor for illicit sex, admitting he used social media and a cell phone to manipulate the child into sending sexually explicit images.
Norman, who began his predatory behavior in September 2014, admitted to directing the girl to produce child pornography over a span of nearly three weeks. He exchanged graphic images with her and repeatedly urged her to engage in sexual activity. The abuse unfolded through digital channels, with Norman leveraging technology to groom and exploit his young victim from a distance.
The scheme unraveled when the girl’s mother discovered messages and photos on her daughter’s iPod. She immediately contacted law enforcement, triggering an investigation. Officers seized the device and began communicating with Norman, posing as the girl. Believing he was still talking to his underage target, Norman arranged a meeting to have sex at his apartment.
He arrived as planned—and was arrested on the spot. Once in custody, Norman confessed to investigators that this wasn’t his first offense. He admitted using the same manipulative tactics a year earlier to lure a 14-year-old girl into a sexual relationship, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior targeting minors online.
The case was investigated by a coalition of federal and local agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Barry County Sheriff’s Department, the Southwest Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force, and the Purdy Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Carney prosecuted the case in federal court, where U.S. District Judge M. Douglas Harpool handed down the sentence without parole.
This prosecution was part of Project Safe Childhood, a Justice Department initiative launched in 2006 to combat the surge in child sexual exploitation. The program combines federal, state, and local efforts to track down predators, rescue victims, and dismantle networks of child abuse. Norman’s conviction underscores the dark underbelly of digital connectivity—and the vigilance required to protect children from predators hiding behind screens.
