Brandon Lee Deavers, Child Pornography Distribution, Missouri 2016

Brandon Lee Deavers, 22, of Columbia, Mo., is facing federal charges after being indicted on two counts of child pornography-related offenses. The indictment, returned by a federal grand jury in Jefferson City, alleges Deavers received and distributed child porn over the Internet between July 1 and October 19, 2016. He is also charged with accessing material with the intent to view child pornography during the same period.

The U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Missouri, Tammy Dickinson, confirmed the indictment today, marking a key escalation in a case that began at the state level. State charges filed against Deavers in Boone County will be dropped in favor of the federal prosecution, a move that underscores the severity and jurisdictional reach of the allegations.

According to court documents, digital evidence traced illicit activity back to Deavers’ online accounts and devices. Federal investigators say the materials were shared through peer-to-peer networks and obscured file-sharing platforms, a common vector in modern child exploitation cases. The FBI and Boone County Sheriff’s Department collaborated on the investigation, pulling digital threads that led directly to Deavers.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Ashley S. Turner is prosecuting the case, which falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Childhood—a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat child sexual exploitation. The program coordinates federal, state, and local efforts to track down offenders and rescue victims, leveraging advanced forensic tools and interagency cooperation.

Dickinson emphasized that the indictment is not a conviction, but an accusation requiring proof in court. “A federal trial jury will ultimately decide guilt or innocence,” she said. “Our obligation is to present the evidence. Theirs is to deliver justice.”

Deavers remains in custody pending further legal proceedings. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence and lifelong registration as a sex offender. The case continues to unfold as federal prosecutors prepare for trial, with digital forensics expected to play a central role. For more on Project Safe Childhood, visit www.usdoj.gov/psc.
