Defendant Handed Down 27-Month Prison Term for Escaping Federal Custody

A 30-year-old Waterloo man will spend the next 27 months behind bars after being sentenced for escaping federal custody.

Chaston Fox, a resident of Waterloo, Iowa, was handed down the prison term by United States District Court Judge C.J. Williams in Cedar Rapids.

According to court documents, Fox was sentenced in May 2020 to serve 47 months in federal prison for possession of a firearm. He was later placed in the Waterloo Residential Reentry Center in May 2022 to complete his federal sentence.

However, Fox had other plans. On October 1, 2022, he escaped from the facility and remained a fugitive until his arrest in December 2022.

After a guilty plea to escape from federal custody on May 18, 2023, Fox was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison. He will also serve a three-year term of supervised release upon completion of his prison sentence.

There is no parole in the federal system, meaning Fox will be required to serve every day of his sentence.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Patrick J. Reinert and investigated by the United States Marshal’s Service and the Waterloo Police Department.

Fox is currently being held in the United States Marshal’s custody until he can be transported to a federal prison.
