Little Eagle Man Charged with Child Abuse and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon

In a shocking turn of events, Chavez Spotted Horse, a 40-year-old man from Little Eagle, South Dakota, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for Child Abuse and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

The indictment alleges that between November 27, 2016, and November 30, 2016, Spotted Horse hit a juvenile victim on three separate occasions with a kitchen spoon, a rod, and a plastic hanger. This brutal abuse has left the community in shock and outrage.

Chavez Spotted Horse was indicted on January 19, 2017, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge William D. Gerdes on January 27, 2017, where he pled not guilty to the Indictment. The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 60 years in custody and/or a fine of up to $1,500,000, 3 years of supervised release, and $600 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley is prosecuting the case. Spotted Horse was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has not been set.
