Elkins Man Convicted of Illegally Possessing a Firearm

ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – In a shocking turn of events, Jason Randall Howard, 38, of Elkins, West Virginia, pleaded guilty to one count of Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. According to Acting United States Attorney Betsy Steinfeld Jividen, Howard admitted to possessing a 9mm pistol in Randolph County in August 2016, despite being previously convicted of Domestic Battery in Randolph County.

Howard’s guilty plea comes as a result of an investigation by the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force and the Barbour County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephen D. Warner prosecuted the case on behalf of the government.

Under federal sentencing guidelines, Howard faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000. The actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Aloi presided over the case.

Howard’s case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. As a convicted felon, Howard was prohibited from possessing a firearm, and his actions put himself and others at risk.

The guilty plea is a significant step towards justice, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who break the law are held accountable.

In related news, the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force has seen a significant increase in arrests and convictions for firearms-related offenses in recent years. This trend highlights the importance of vigilant law enforcement and community partnerships in keeping our streets safe.
