ST. LOUIS, MO – In a gritty twist to the Plaza Frontenac heist saga, 22-year-old Dejuan Wingard of Chicago has pleaded guilty to federal charges of interstate transportation of stolen property, marking the final plea from eight individuals indicted for their part in the smash-and-grab theft of Chanel handbags from the Saks Fifth Avenue store on November 26, 2016.

Wingard’s admission comes as a group of five Chicagoans, also accused of involvement in the crime, await trial in United States v William Curry, et al. The gang is said to have made off with high-end purses and driven into Illinois before their arrest near Litchfield, Illinois.

As the last defendant to face sentencing, Wingard now awaits judgment alongside his co-defendants, each facing a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and fines reaching $250,000. Sentencing for Wingard is set for August 1, 2017.

In a joint effort against organized crime, the FBI and the Frontenac Police Department prosecuted the case with backing from the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s office. The U.S. Sentencing Guidelines will guide the judges in determining actual sentences.

For their role in the ‘smash and grab’ theft, all eight defendants are facing substantial consequences, a stark reminder of the severe penalties for organized crime activities across state lines.
