Jonathan Lovato, a 41-year-old Pena Blanca man, was arrested on April 9, 2026, for allegedly punching and strangling a minor in his care. The incident occurred at Lovato’s residence, where he held down and punched the minor with a closed fist several times before strangling them, causing them to pass out. The minor escaped and went to a family member’s home, who immediately called law enforcement. Lovato, an enrolled member of the Pueblo of Santo Domingo, was taken into custody at his residence.
The minor was treated at a local hospital for brain bleeding before being transferred to Albuquerque for further care. Lovato is charged with child abuse and will remain on conditions of release pending trial, which has not been scheduled. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, investigated the case, with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Eliot Neal is prosecuting the case, which was announced by First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris.
