In Wyoming, a disturbing reality is being confronted head-on: child abuse and neglect. This April, U.S. Attorney Darin Smith is teaming up with local communities to observe National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a crucial effort to protect the state’s most vulnerable citizens. The initiative aims to prevent child abuse and neglect by promoting safe, stable, and nurturing environments for kids to thrive. Smith joined Mayor Patrick Collins on April 14 for a proclamation at Wyoming Child and Family Development, Laramie County Headstart, and will also join the Laramie County Commissioners on April 21.
Research has consistently shown that positive childhood experiences, such as feeling safe and supported, lead to improved health outcomes, higher educational attainment, and greater economic stability. By investing in strong families and supportive communities, Wyoming can reduce the long-term reliance on public systems and build a safer, more resilient community for generations to come. U.S. Attorney Smith emphasized that prevention is not just a social priority, but a shared responsibility and one of the most effective tools to reduce future harm.
