Jackson Moss, a 38-year-old Rapid City, South Dakota, man, was sentenced to 9 years in federal prison for receiving child pornography. Between June and December 2024, Moss used the internet-based chat application Kik to search for, download, and view sexually explicit visual depictions of minors under the age of 18. The investigation, which began after the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received at least 12 CyberTips, found 649 images and 185 videos of child pornography on Moss’s phone.
Moss pleaded guilty to the charges on April 21, 2026, and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler on August 3, 2026. In addition to the prison sentence, Moss was ordered to pay $15,095 in restitution and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Several cell phones were also forfeited as part of the sentence.
The case was investigated by the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
Moss’s sentence is a significant step in the fight against child pornography and exploitation. The use of online platforms to distribute and consume child pornography is a growing concern, and law enforcement agencies are working to identify and prosecute those involved.
