PORTLAND, Ore. — A grim chapter in the annals of Oregon’s sex crime saga unfolded today as previously-convicted sex offender John Christopher Christensen, 49, from Salem, was sentenced to a staggering 210 months in federal prison for receiving child pornography.
The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Michael Simon, includes a concurrent 15-year term of supervised release following his release from prison.
According to court documents, investigators with the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) stumbled upon an online chatroom in December 2022 dedicated to trading images of child sexual abuse. Christensen was identified as a participant in this sinister forum. Further investigation revealed that he was a registered sex offender who had previously been convicted of a sex offense against a minor.
The revelation did not end there. Salem police arrested Christensen on January 1, 2023, charging him with new offenses involving minors. Mid-January saw investigators serving a federal search warrant at Christensen’s residence, where they recovered devices laden with child pornography, some of which matched images from the chatroom.
Christensen faced federal charges after serving a state sentence for luring a minor, and he pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography in May 2025. The investigation was led by HSI, with significant assistance from the Salem Police Department, while Gary Sussman, Assistant U.S. Attorney for the District of Oregon, prosecuted the case.
