Christopher Harwood Mason, Assault, Montana 2018

A disturbing act of violence on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation has landed a Browning man behind bars. Christopher Harwood Mason, 55, pleaded guilty to assault by striking, beating or wounding, a misdemeanor.

The incident occurred on December 30, 2018, when a vehicle driven by Mason struck an ambulance from behind. Emergency medical services personnel were on a call in Browning at the time. After the crash, Mason backed up and parked his vehicle in his driveway. EMS personnel then witnessed Mason exit his vehicle and begin hitting a woman in the face.

Law enforcement photographed the victim’s injuries and blood on her face. Mason admitted to striking the woman in the face after being taken to the hospital for assessment of potential injuries from the crash. He made the admission to Glacier County Sheriff’s Office law enforcement.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kalah Paisley prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Glacier County Sheriff’s Office. U.S. Magistrate Judge John T. Johnston presided over the sentencing.

As a result of the guilty plea, Mason was sentenced to 18 months of probation. This outcome has left many in the community questioning whether justice has been served.

The fact that Mason was able to back up and park his vehicle after the crash, and then proceed to assault the woman, raises serious concerns about his behavior and judgment. It is unclear what factors led to this disturbing sequence of events.

The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, especially when those actions result in harm to others. The community is left to wonder what could have been done to prevent this incident and what measures can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
