LAKE CHARLES, LA – A reckless flight from Lake Charles Police led to a major fentanyl bust and a lengthy prison sentence for Christopher Wayne Jones, II, 29. Jones was sentenced to 175 months (14 years, 7 months) in federal prison followed by 4 years of supervised release after pleading guilty to possessing with the intent to distribute fentanyl. The chase began November 4, 2020, when an officer spotted Jones speeding on 18th Street.
Instead of complying with the traffic stop, Jones floored it, leading officers on a short but dangerous pursuit. He ultimately crashed into a utility pole, abandoning his vehicle and a red backpack. A subsequent search revealed the backpack contained approximately 554 pills weighing 282 grams – a deadly cocktail of acetaminophen and fentanyl. Adding to the charges, a loaded Taurus 9mm pistol was discovered in the front seat of Jones’ vehicle, suggesting a willingness to protect his illicit cargo.
The sentencing isn’t isolated. In a separate case, Michael Javel Toefield, 52, of Baytown, Texas, received 130 months (10 years, 10 months) in prison and 4 years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. A K-9 unit during a traffic stop on May 13, 2019, alerted officers to narcotics hidden inside a cardboard beer box within Toefield’s vehicle. Inside, they found over 500 grams of meth. Toefield admitted knowing the drugs were concealed there.
Moving to Lafayette, Shane Christopher Malveaux, 51, of Eunice, Louisiana, was sentenced to 100 months (8 years, 4 months) in prison and 3 years of supervised release for conspiring to distribute and possess cocaine and cocaine base. Malveaux’s involvement in a drug trafficking operation spanned from August 2019 to January 2021, uncovered by a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigation. The DEA documented his role in a wider conspiracy.
U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown’s office secured these convictions, highlighting a concerted effort to dismantle narcotics networks across Western Louisiana. The investigations were a collaborative effort, involving the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the Lake Charles Police Department, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, the Calcasieu Parish Combined Anti-Drug Task Force, and the DEA. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel J. Vermaelen handled the prosecutions in the Jones and Toefield cases.
These sentences, totaling over 43 years, send a clear message: trafficking deadly drugs like fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine will be met with serious federal consequences. While these convictions represent a blow to these specific operations, the relentless flow of narcotics into Louisiana remains a significant challenge for law enforcement. The Grimy Times will continue to track these cases and report on the ongoing battle against the drug trade.
