A federal grand jury has handed down a guilty verdict in the case of United States v. Clanton, a massive fentanyl trafficking operation that spanned the eastern United States.
According to court documents, Clanton, a 35-year-old resident of Fayetteville, North Carolina, was at the helm of a deadly fentanyl trafficking empire that brought poison to cities and towns across the country. The operation was dismantled by federal authorities in a series of raids and arrests that took place in 2015.
Clanton’s fentanyl trafficking ring was responsible for the distribution of hundreds of kilograms of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that has claimed thousands of lives in recent years. The operation was said to have generated millions of dollars in profit for Clanton and his associates.
As part of his guilty plea, Clanton agreed to forfeit over $1.2 million in cash and assets related to the operation. He also faces a sentence of up to 20 years in federal prison.
At the time of his arrest, Clanton was charged with one count of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute fentanyl, as well as one count of possession of fentanyl with intent to distribute.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of fentanyl trafficking and the devastating impact it has on communities across the country. As federal authorities continue to crack down on these operations, it’s clear that the battle against fentanyl is far from over.
