SIOUX CITY, IA – Chad Stocks, a 37-year-old resident of Clarion, Iowa, is headed back to a federal cage after receiving a 33-month sentence for escaping custody and violating the terms of his supervised release. Stocks pleaded guilty back on October 13, 2017, to one count of escape, a charge stemming from a brazen walk-off from a Mason City residential facility.
The escape wasn’t a first for Stocks. Back in 2007, he was slammed with a hefty 168-month sentence for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and illegally possessing a firearm during a drug deal. He’d been released from that lengthy term on April 14, 2017, and briefly held at the Beje Clark Residential Release Center, with a planned release date of July 3, 2017. He didn’t wait for the paperwork. On June 21, 2017, he simply bolted, ignoring the conditions of his release.
Chief U.S. District Judge Leonard T. Strand handed down the sentence in Sioux City. The judge stacked the penalties: 12 months for the escape itself and a further 21 months for the supervised release violations. Beyond the 33 months behind bars, Stocks will also be under the watchful eye of a supervising officer for three years after he’s released – a formality in a federal system with no parole.
Prosecutors detailed to the court how Stocks’ actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law and a clear pattern of criminal behavior. Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn S. Wehde successfully argued for the full sentence, emphasizing Stocks’ prior convictions and his failure to abide by even the most basic conditions of his release. The U.S. Marshals Service, who led the investigation, now hold Stocks in custody while awaiting transport to a designated federal prison.
This case underscores the relentless pursuit of fugitives by federal law enforcement. Despite being granted a second chance through supervised release, Stocks chose to break the law again, leading to a significantly harsher outcome. The U.S. Marshals Service acted swiftly to recapture Stocks and bring him to justice.
